Strategic Update Digital Newsletter, October 2021
Sigma Kappa is pleased to share with you an update on our progress on our Strategic Plan
STRATEGIC UPDATE
Dear Sigma Kappas,
National council and staff finalized the 2020-2023 strategic plan in December 2020. Almost one
year into the plan, we are pleased to share with you an overall update on our progress. The
three pillars of the strategic plan focus on strategic leadership; diversity, equity, inclusion and
access; and a modernized membership experience. Despite working through the twists and turns
of operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, we were still able to make significant progress on
the plan.
Click here to read the Strategic Plan Update and learn more about the DEIA and personnel
committees and what's next for the Sorority. Watch the website for continued updates on the
strategic plan and ways to stay connected to Sigma Kappa.

Strategic Update
Dear Sigma Kappas,
National council and staff finalized the 2020-2023 strategic plan in December 2020. Almost
one year into the plan, we are pleased to share with you an overall update on our progress. The
three pillars of the strategic plan focus on strategic leadership; diversity, equity, inclusion and
access; and a modernized membership experience. Despite working through the twists and
turns of operations during the COVID-19 pandemic, we were still able to make significant prog-
ress on the plan. Below are a few highlights of our work thus far.
Strategic Leadership
With the assistance of the volunteer structure task force, national council approved a new
volunteer structure to build a more transparent and accessible volunteer process. The new
structure includes a personnel committee that is reviewing national volunteer and advisory
board supervisor (ABS) applications and working with staff and subject matter experts to
conduct interviews with interested candidates. All volunteer appointments will begin on
January 1, 2022.
As national council continues the transition to governance, an outside firm made
recommendations for the staff structure to ensure NHQ can support the change. Staff is also
reviewing all chapter support systems/partners to ensure they meet the needs of membership
and are fiscally sustainable.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Access
The boards and staff of the Sorority, Foundation and NHC remain committed to examining
ourselves, our policies and practices to determine whether we are contributing, actively
or passively, to social inequity. In June, additional DEIA priorities were created. The 2021-
2022 DEIA committee has been appointed to research and make recommendations on
key DEIA focus areas identified by boards and staff. The history task force continues to
research our history with a goal of communicating their findings in the winter issue of the
Sigma Kappa Triangle. The ritual inclusivity work group has begun work to carry forward
recommendations designed to make our Ritual more inclusive. Modifications to our Ritual
will be introduced at convention 2022 in Denver, along with many proposed Bylaws
amendments designed to eliminate barriers to access in the Sigma Kappa
membership experience.

Modernized Member Experience
NHQ staff has contracted with Loyalty Research Center to conduct an engagement and
retention study. The retention study was sent to all collegiate members this fall and the
alumnae survey will be sent in late 2021. Staff has also reviewed how we share information with
our members in an effort to reduce the number of communications our members receive and
ensure we are being transparent and sharing what members want to know.
What's Next
Priorities for the next several months include planning for the Emerging Leaders Conferences
and Convention 2022 in Denver. Our time in Denver will be spent celebrating our values and
discussing recommended Bylaws amendments (to be distributed in March 2022). We are also
working on a redesign of the website to make it more accessible and interactive. We are in
the process of reevaluating serval programs including The Promise Program, Legacy Link and
recruitment introduction forms.
We hope you will continue to follow our strategic plan progress and be actively involved in
Sigma Kappa. 147 years ago, on November 9, 1874, Sigma Kappa was officially recognized by
Colby College. Today and always, I encourage you to live with heart and I wish you a very Happy
Founders' Day!

Ann O'Connell Adams, Theta, National President
