Sisterhood

Miranda Martino, Delta Eta, Storyport, January 25, 2024

Why are you proud to be a Sigma Kappa?I am proud to be a Sigma Kappa because everywhere I go, there is a way to connect to our values as well as our sisterhood in the community. By being a Sigma Kappa, it truly has been for life as I continue to volunteer as an ABS as well as at different leadership summits / opportunities with the organization. I am proud to continue to connect and mentor Sigma Kappa women, advisors, etc. Being a Sigma Kappa has also benefited me in my work as a School Psychologist as well as working at a University, as our values and teachings from my days as an active member continue to benefit me in my professional career.Share your favorite moment from your time as a Sigma Kappa undergraduate member. My favorite moment in my undergraduate career was watching my childhood best friend, Kayli, come home to our chapter on Bid Day. It was amazing to welcome my best friend into our sisterhood for life. It was such a surprise and we continue to bond over Sigma Kappa to this day. What is your favorite Sigma Kappa memory? My favorite memory is actually one of being an advisor! I had just moved to Greeley, CO and was welcomed with open arms into the chapter house as I waited for two days for my apartment to be ready. It was my first day as an RS and in Colorado and the women of the chapter made me feel at home and lessened my nerves so much. I will always remember that and think of it fondly.PhotoMiranda Martino and Kayli Craig (Manley) at 2015 Walk to End Alz in Kansas City, Missouri

Sally Straffon, Alpha Tau, StoryPort, April 1, 2024

I arrived at Michigan State University in 1959 as a fresh-faced freshman from a tiny northern Michigan town, Mio Michigan (population 1,000 and a graduating class of 25 students.) At that time, MSU boasted 25,000 students and I knew I had to quickly find my new home away from home! So - I rushed and found my new home in Alpha Tau, Sigma Kappa. The ensuing four years were life-changing for this small-town girl; as an only child, I found the sisters I had always longed for, had all the fun afforded to children of the 50s and 60s and honed my leadership skills which led me to become House President my senior year!Upon graduation, I married (a Lambda Chi) and a few years later sang our daughters to sleep with my favorite EK song, "Little Bunch of Violets".I wear a silver EK ring every single day, and when putting it on each morning, I smile in remembrance of my awesome collegiate days with my Ek sisters as we laughed, loved, and became strong women in the spirit of "One Heart One Way."

Why are you proud to be a Sigma Kappa?Becoming a Sigma Kappa is literally what changed my future as a leader. Prior to being a Sigma Kappa, I was a follower. I was the person who sat in the back of the room, was chosen last for team activities in school, was made fun of, and rarely shared my opinion. Once I joined Sigma Kappa, I was able to find my inner voice, and become a true leader, thanks largely to my mentor and Chapter Advisor Ann Felice Bertin Thiel. I truly believe I am the leader and professional I am today due to Sigma Kappa.Share your favorite moment from your time as a Sigma Kappa undergraduate member.Being able to go through initiation as a part of the recolonization of the Gamma Gamma chapter at Indiana State University. What is your favorite Sigma Kappa memory? My favorite memory of Sigma Kappa is all of the dances we hosted, the fun we had preparing for and carrying out rush parties, and our Tandem and Trike race teams.Identify any individuals mentioned or depicted. This is our formal pledge class photo from Indiana State University Gamma Gamma re-colonization class.Tell us about the materials you are sharing and how they are related to your Sigma Kappa experience. This picture was one of the first times in my life where I felt a true part of something. I felt powerful standing amongst these ladies. I felt loved. It felt amazing.
